 Years aboard: 1962/63, VF 11
Comments: VF11 and Air Group 1 deployed on a Med Cruise in Sept of 62 . We returned late April 1963. The extended
time was due to the Enterprise returning back to the states for yard work prior to her round the world tour with
other nuclear powered surface ships. Winter 62/63 was extremely cold. Often it was snowing at sea, in the Med. In
med November,we had an AD go up the axial deck, during a heavy rain storm, striking aircraft aft of the island and
forward on the starboard cat. We fought the fire for three hours before bringing it under control. We lost 13
aircraft in the melee. The reserve aircraft pool in Rota, Spain was almost depleted.
We almost cut our Russian Trawler escort in half as she jockeyed for position on our starboard side. We were in the
midst our recovering aircraft and wouldn\'t heave to. I remember the trawler\'s mast going by the \"angle dangle\"
as she passed by our port side.
